The Music: Labrinth ‘Electronic Earth’ Review

The Music: Labrinth ‘Electronic Earth’ Review

Team UK in 2012 is strong. Dominating the single and album charts, homegrown urban talent is once again established as a bankable asset (Remember So-Solid circa 1999) which therefore makes the signing of artist and producer Labrinth by Simon Cowell an intelligent decision.

‘Electronic Earth’ sounds to me, like it would of regardless of this resurgence or Simon’s input. A strong, largely self produced body of work with a direction, to blend the acoustic with the electronic.

Labrinth vocals and messages bring the soul with lyrics such a “Boy’s don’t cry, I need treatment” on the mid tempo ‘Treatment” he blends electro elements in much the same way as Coldplay have with “Mylo Xyloto”

“Climb On Board” a standout for me and opener for the set, is a blended affair of piano rifts, AutoTune, D&B drums and Street Fighter effects. While single “Last Time” could be the soundtrack to any Sega mega drive classic. (Golden Axe anyone?)

This variation makes for a mature, refreshing and highly listenable, however the much needed punch, Labrinth is capable of (Tinie Tempah ‘Pass Out’ / Ms Dynamite “Neva Soft”)  would of a been a nice addition.

The Film: Illegal Activity

The Film: Illegal Activity

“If books where illegal, would you read more?”

“If books were illegal, and the hustlers were scholars that had to smuggle pages through customs in their stomach…”

“If books were illegal and people got respect for how much they read?”

Illegal Activity is an action-packed drama set in a rough housing estate in London, yet nothing on the block is quite how it seems. We follow Winston a street level dealer and his crew for one day, witnessing the devastating effect their trade has on the block. Society is crumbling, families unravel and desperation causes internal conflict. The need to satisfy this addiction spirals out of control. Police are closing in and are determined to infiltrate the hierarchy in an attempt to put a stop to this Illegal Activity.

The Short “Illegal Activity” is a refreshing take on the familiar London Inner city set urban genre, of television and film. I won’t reveal the twist and the questions associated with it plot, but I would recommend the clip to all.

Released in march 2012 and directed by Sebastian Thiel, under the tag line “Knowledge is Power” visit here for additional information.

The Fragrance: Bleu De Chanel

The Fragrance: Bleu De Chanel

Its was birthday this week, and in addition to the cards, bottles of beer and socks that usually grace me on such gift occasions was a new bottle of aftershave. Blue De Chanel.

I am not a connoisseur when it comes the fragrance, top notes, low notes… all the same to me. But i will say its Code recommended. Here’s what the brand have to say…

A woody aromatic fragrance for the man who defies convention, and resists the ordinary every day, finding satisfaction in the unexpected. His fragrance, a provocative blend of citrus and woods, liberates the senses — fresh, clean, profoundly sensual — a signature statement of determination and desire. Be unexpected.

I will let you know if ‘Bleu De Chanel’ assists me in my quest to deify convention…

The Art: Damien Hirst – Retrospective

Famed and respected artist, Damien Hirst, hold his first Retrospective showing this year at London’s Tate Modern.

The current exhibition will include iconic sculptures from his Natural History series, including ’The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ 1991, In which he suspended a shark in formaldehyde, a personal favorite of mine.

Around 11 or 12 I attended ‘Sensation‘ a exhibition for young artists held at thr RCA featuring works owned by Charles Saatchi, which included Hirst ‘Shark’ The image always stayed with me. After never really appreciating the impact of the work the Tate’s survey of Hirst is a great opportunity which I would recommend to all.
